Jamal Murray makes huge sacrifice in signing Nuggets extension

The Denver Nuggets made a significant long-term move this offseason, securing their star point guard Jamal Murray with a four-year, $208 million contract extension.

This decision came after Murray had already completed four years of his previous five-year, $195 million deal.

While the Nuggets had a relatively quiet summer with no major acquisitions aside from Russell Westbrook and the loss of key shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, this extension was a key step in ensuring the franchise’s future stability.

Murray‘s new deal sets him up to earn $244 million over the next five years, reinforcing his status as an NBA franchise cornerstone.

Despite the substantial figures, however, Murray could have potentially signed an even bigger deal.

If he had made the All-NBA team, the 27-year-old guard would have been eligible for a five-year veteran contract worth $314 million, meaning he sacrificed an additional $106 million by agreeing to his current deal.

The absence of an All-NBA selection is the deciding factor here.

Nuggets set to benefit

While Murray is widely recognized as one of the NBA’s elite guards, he has yet to make an All-Star team, and the All-NBA selection would have been an even tougher goal to achieve.

Nonetheless, his performance has been crucial for the Nuggets, and his playoff success further elevates his status in the league.

By opting for the four-year deal, Murray not only secured his financial future but also helped the Nuggets avoid a financial strain.

This gives Denver flexibility to maintain a competitive roster around Murray, including assets like Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon, as they aim to remain top contenders in the Western Conference.

With Murray now locked in, the Nuggets are well-positioned to build on their recent success and continue pursuing championships.
