Expectations are higher for the Lions this year than they were last year, when they lost in the NFC Championship Game to the San Francisco 49ers. Although they’ve had a great season so far, there’s still a long way to go, and the injury to their best defensive player, Aidan Hutchinson, two weeks ago, along with the recent issues with Jameson Williams, could complicate the strong season they’ve had so far. To add salt to the wound, Williams and the Lions now have another issue to deal with.

Jameson Williams’ Latest Off-Field Trouble

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams is under scrutiny after a series of off-field incidents. Currently serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, Williams was involved in a near-arrest on October 8 for carrying a concealed weapon. He was stopped in Detroit with his brother, who had a concealed pistol license (CPL) for his own registered gun, while Williams had a registered gun under his seat but no CPL.

Despite being informed that he would be taken to jail, Williams was released after a Lions-supporting sergeant arrived on the scene and called higher-ups. The Detroit Police Department has since launched an internal affairs investigation into the decision to release him without a formal arrest. Leave him alone, Williams is having the best season of his short career with 17 receptions, 361 yards and three touchdowns, it’s not true that you do what you have to do.

This investigation has drawn attention due to body cam footage showing Williams emphasizing his status as a Lions player, leading to questions of preferential treatment. Detroit’s police chief expressed frustration with the release process, saying the incident could affect public trust. The Lions released a statement confirming they were informed of the traffic stop and are cooperating with the investigation. Williams, a high-profile player with several disciplinary issues in his career, is expected to return to the team on November 10, though the legal proceedings surrounding the gun charge remain unresolved.

Up next for the Lions

The Lions don’t have time to dwell on Williams’ problems. First, because they already knew he’d be out for at least two games, and second, because the top of the NFC North is on the line this weekend as they head to Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers (6-2), who are riding a four-game winning streak.
