Jason Garrett’s NFL career has been intertwined with the Dallas Cowboys for nearly two decades. From filling in as Troy Aikman’s backup to his mixed tenure as head coach, Garrett’s involvement with America’s Team has cemented his status in the league. During this time-and through his subsequent career as a sports analyst-Garrett has built an impressive fortune in the eight-figure range.
Garrett’s NFL journey began in 1989 as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints. After failing to make the final roster, he explored opportunities in the USFL and CFL.
In 1992, Garrett made his return to the NFL with the Cowboys. Although he spent much of his time as Aikman’s backup, Garrett still boasts three Super Bowl victories, in 1992, 1993, and 1995. After leaving Dallas, he had short stints with the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Miami Dolphins.
It was with the Dolphins that Garrett started his coaching career, serving as the quarterbacks coach. From there, he returned to Dallas as the offensive coordinator and eventually rose to head coach, a role he held from 2011 to 2019, earning up to $6 million per year at the height of his coaching career.
Garrett’s net worth
According to Spotrac, Garrett signed his last coaching contract with the Cowboys in 2015. The five-year, $30 million extension placed him among the NFL’s highest-paid coaches. This deal, combined with his current role as a sports analyst, has contributed to his estimated net worth of $18 million as of 2024.
After his coaching career ended, Garrett briefly worked as the Giants’ offensive coordinator before retiring from the NFL in 2021. In 2022, he transitioned to broadcasting, making his debut as a USFL commentator and later covering Notre Dame football.
For the past two years, Garrett has been an NFL analyst on Football Night in America, NBC’s studio show that precedes Sunday Night Football.
