Jayden Daniels’ accomplishment that puts him on par with Peyton Manning himself: Only they have achieved it

The Washington Commanders secured their first playoff victory since 2005 on Sunday night, edging out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a thrilling 23-20 win on the road. The game came down to a dramatic last-second field goal by Zane Gonzalez, who watched as his 37-yard attempt struck the upright before falling through as time expired. It was a nail-biting finish, but the Commanders emerged victorious, snapping their lengthy playoff drought.

Jayden Daniels makes history

The spotlight of the win shone brightly on Jayden Daniels, the Commanders‘ rookie quarterback, who delivered another outstanding performance.

Daniels threw for 268 yards, recording two touchdowns and no interceptions, while also leading the team in rushing with 36 yards on 13 carries.

His efforts were a continuation of his impressive NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign, further solidifying his status as one of the league’s most promising young quarterbacks.

Daniels’ performance on Sunday night was historic. He became the first quarterback other than Peyton Manning to lead an offense to a playoff win without any punts or turnovers on the road.

The achievement, pointed out by Evan Abrams, was something Manning accomplished back in 2004. That year, the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 38-31, with Manning throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns. The Colts did not punt once during the game, a feat Daniels replicated on Sunday night.

For Daniels, having his name associated with Manning’s is an honor, as Manning is widely regarded as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. In fact, Manning’s 2004 performance was considered one of the best road playoff games by a quarterback in NFL history.

The win has the Commanders feeling confident as they prepare for their next challenge: a road playoff matchup with the Detroit Lions, the NFC’s No. 1 seed. The game will take place on Saturday, January 18, and will test the Commanders’ resolve as they look to continue their postseason journey.
