Jayson Tatum snubs the Indiana Fever‘s Caitlin Clark as the Boston Celtics star opts to name the Las Vegas Aces A’ja Wilson as his favorite player in the WNBA, in a definitive answer that he didn’t have to think about.
The 26-year-old NBA champion was preparing for the All-Star Game where he represented the Eastern Conference alongside the likes of Karl-Anthony Towns, Donovan Mitchell and Tyler Herro after Giannis Antetokounmpo backed out through injury.
Yet his eyes were turned to women’s basketball when he was asked to name who he enjoys watching the most from the WNBA, and he had no qualms picking the Aces’ two-time champion and three-time MVP for the honor.
“A’ja Wilson,” Tatum simply told media on February 15, without hesitation, picking one of his close friends. However, this isn’t a pal looking out for a pal. Wilson backs up her hype with impressive talents on the court.
In 2024, the 28-year-old was once again voted MVP as she led her side to the WNBA semifinals, just months after becoming an Olympic gold medallist for the second time. She produced averages of 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
She also became the first player to have at least 35+ points, 10+ rebounds, and 5+ steals in a single game in league history, as well as becoming the first player to ever shoot more than 1000 points in a single season in the WNBA, as she set the single season record.
Wilson was eventually voted MVP with a unanimous 67 out 67 votes for the spot, as the forward beat Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart for the prize. The Fever’s Clark finished fourth, ahead of Alyssa Thomas.
Tatum’s solid All-Star outing
Partnered alongside the likes of Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and LeBron James, it’s always going to be tough to find minutes in the NBA All-Star game and that’s how it played out for the Celtics ace as he only saw 11 minutes of action.
Yet he still put up the numbers in that time, making 15 points for three rebounds and two assists in the 41-25 final, as well as making 75% of his three-point efforts. He returns to regular season action against the Philadelphia 76ers on February 20.
