The recent sale of the Boston Celtics, one of the most storied franchises in the NBA, has got everyone talking.
Bill Chisholm, the managing partner of Symphony Technology Group (STG), bought the team for an eye-popping $6.1 billion. The sale has led many to wonder whether any franchise across North America can be sold as long as the price is right.

The previous record when it comes to the sale price of a sports franchise in the USA was the Washington Commanders. Josh Harris and company bought the NFC East side for $6.05 billion in 2023, which beat the $4 billion Matt Ishbia paid for the Phoenix Suns earlier in the year.
One of the biggest questions floating amongst fans following the Celtics sale is if Boston was sold for $6.1 billion, how much would the Dallas Cowboys be sold for?
Cowboys brand remains strong
Although the Cowboys haven’t won the Super Bowl since 1995, America’s Team remains one of the most popular in North American sports.
Jerry Jones may get plenty of criticism for failing to build a winner, but there is no denying is a shrewd businessman. He bought the Cowboys for just $140 million in 1989, which is equal to about $270 million today,
Thanks to Jones’ impressive work in building the Cowboys brand, Forbes reports the team is worth over $10 billion – making it the first North American sports franchise to reach the evaluation.
Now, fans on Reddit are wondering if Jones might consider selling the Cowboys given how much money he would earn given his initial investment.
It’s no surprise when you consider Cowboys fans have gown tired of the teams struggles in recent years, having been unable to even make the NFC Championship in the past 30 year.s
“Come on Jerry, that’s a record you know you want,” wrote one fan.
Another wrote: “S**t, Jerry could get $9 billion maybe.”
“When Jerry Jones steps away from football, the Cowboys will slowly but surely rise to dominance again. We’re not in a hurry to see that happen so no sale,” wrote one fan who clearly isn’t a fan of the team.
