Mexican basketball has not produced many players who have truly stood out in the NBA. There have been a few who managed to leave their mark, but now an 18-year-old prospect has emerged with remarkably high projections.
This is the list of those who have played in the league:
- Juan Toscano-Anderson (Warriors, Lakers, Jazz, Kings)
- Jorge Gutirrez (Nets, Bucks, Hornets)
- Gustavo Ayn (Hornets, Magic, Bucks, Hawks)
- Eduardo Njera (Mavericks, Nuggets, Warriors, Nets, Bobcats)
- Horacio Llamas (Suns)
- Jaime Jquez Jr. (Miami Heat)
- KJ Simpson (Charlotte Hornets)
However, for the upcoming 2026 draft, which is still a few months away, Karim Lpez is generating significant expectations, despite not playing for a United States high school program.
At 18, Karim Lpez declares for the NBA Draft
Karim Lpez currently plays in Australia’s National Basketball League and recently announced his intention to enter the NBA Draft, according to ESPN reporter Shams Charania.
It’s been my dream and my goal my whole life to play in the NBA.”…”Honestly, since I can remember. I was probably like 5 years old, making drawings of myself playing in the NBA … It’s pretty special, you know, to be in this position right now.
Karim Lpez
Lpez said.
Karim is a highly regarded prospect who hopes to be selected in the first round of the draft. If that happens, he would become the first Mexican player ever to be chosen in the opening round by an NBA franchise.
Lpez would also become the first player born in Mexico to be drafted since Eduardo Njera, who was selected 38th overall in the 2000 draft by the Houston Rockets.
Njera spent 12 years in the league and played for the following teams:
- Dallas Mavericks
- Golden State Warriors
- Denver Nuggets
- New Jersey Nets
- Charlotte Bobcats
Karim has spent two years in the NBL and chose to pursue a professional route rather than seek a scholarship at a university. Several players have reached the NBA by following a similar path, the same one Lpez is now taking.
- LaMelo Ball
- Josh Giddey
- AJ Johnson
- Alex Sarr
- Ousmane Dieng
- Rayan Rupert
It remains to be seen which team will select him and whether he will make an immediate impact on the lineup of the franchise that ultimately drafts him.
