One of the most impactful moves during the NBA offseason was Klay Thompson’s trade to the Dallas Mavericks.

His arrival in Dallas has created a powerful new trio alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Though Thompson had considered other teams as potential landing spots, it was Irving who seized the opportunity to recruit the star shooter to Dallas.

Thompson, a three-time NBA champion, didn’t require much persuasion from Irving to join forces with the Mavericks.

How strong was Kyrie’s influence?

During the Mavericks’ media day, Irving shed light on how he convinced Thompson to come to Dallas. Drawing from his own experience since joining the team in 2022, Irving explained how the Mavericks provide a supportive environment both on and off the court.

“It was easy to convince Klay to come here,” Irving detailed.

“This team goes out of their way to make sure you feel special, not just on the court but in your life as well.”

Irving’s pitch resonated with Thompson, who is looking for a reset after his worst statistical season since his second year in the league.

Last season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game for the Golden State Warriors and shot under 39 percent from beyond the arc. Though his numbers were down, his ability as a reliable shooter remains unquestioned, and his presence on the court commands respect.

Luka Doncic is excited about what Thompson will bring to the Mavericks’ offense. Speaking during media day, Doncic highlighted the spacing advantage Thompson provides.

“When me and Kai have the ball, you basically can’t help off of Klay,” Doncic explained.

“If you leave him open, he’s going to make it.”

With Thompson now in the fold, the Mavericks are hoping this trio can elevate them to new heights. As they develop chemistry, their success will depend on how well they can leverage each other’s strengths to make Dallas a legitimate contender in the Western Conference.
