Interestingly, the Lakers enter this matchup riding a two-game winning streak that came without LeBron James in the lineup. The duo of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves has been nothing short of spectacular in his absence, boasting a 9-2 record when they share the backfield without the “King.”
While a 13-7 record without LeBron on the floor is certainly respectable, there is a growing narrative in Los Angeles that the team plays with a different, perhaps more fluid, energy when the veterans take a backseat. LeBron remains a game-time decision for tonight, but even if he returns, head coach JJ Redick faces a delicate balancing act.
Bronny James and Dalton Knecht Have Vanished from the Rotation
As the Lakers tighten their rotation for the playoff push, the developmental pieces have been the first to feel the chill. Who is not even taking part in the bench are Bronny James and Dalton Knecht, the two high-profile draft picks from last summer.
Knecht’s decline in usage is particularly puzzling; he hasn’t seen more than 20 minutes of action since November and has been limited to five-minute cameos since the All-Star Break. Meanwhile, Bronny has spent the vast majority of the season in the G League, appearing in just 12 NBA games where he surpassed the six-minute mark.
With only 18 games left in the regular season for the Lakers, Bronny is currently an afterthought in JJ Redick’s tactical plans. His young career has been a stark study in contrast between the G League and the NBA. Through 31 NBA games this season, James is averaging a modest 2.1 points, 1.2 assists, and 0.5 rebounds while shooting 39.7% in very limited spurts (7.2 minutes per game).
Conversely, in his 10 games with the South Bay Lakers, he has looked like a different player entirely, averaging 15.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.4 steals. The numbers suggest that Bronny possesses the offensive rhythm and playmaking ability to contribute, but he simply isn’t being afforded the “extended minutes” required to translate that production to the main stage-even when his father is sidelined.
Lakers Brutal March Schedule for Playoff Seeding
The next couple of weeks will serve as the ultimate litmus test for a Lakers squad that has aspirations of reaching the Finals. Following the pivotal Minnesota game, they face a brief reprieve against the Chicago Bulls, arguably their “easiest” remaining opponent, before the schedule turns into a nightmare.
They are slated to face the Denver Nuggets followed by a gritty road trip against the Houston Rockets, both of whom are battling for their own postseason survival. The road doesn’t get any easier as they head east to face the Heat, Magic, and Pistons.
To close out the 2025-26 campaign, the Lakers will play half of their final 10 games at home, but that home-court advantage will be tested by two massive matchups against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
