Lakers search for answers as warriors dream of Giannis or LeBron

Just over two weeks before the 2026 NBA trade deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers find themselves at a critical crossroads. Despite having a star foundation that includes Luka Doncic, the on-court reality has been painfully clear, as the team has been forced to claw its way back after a difficult start to the season.

LeBron James appears to flip off the Nuggets’ bench

The days when missing the playoffs seemed like a real concern are beginning to fade. Still, the current roster – while solid enough to secure a postseason berth – lacks the defensive depth required to be a legitimate championship contender. That reality points to the need for changes ahead of the February 5 deadline, with decisions made less for the remainder of the regular season and more with high-stakes playoff games in mind.

What do the Lakers need to be strong in the postseason?

The front office faces the challenge of improving the roster without mortgaging the significant salary cap flexibility projected for future seasons. Inside Los Angeles’ offices, a so-called “dream scenario” has emerged, one that points directly toward the New Orleans Pelicans.

The ideal targets are defensive wings Herb Jones or Trey Murphy III. The Lakers’ theoretical proposal would involve sending expiring contracts – such as Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt, or Maxi Kleber – along with young prospect Dalton Knecht and a 2031 first-round pick.

Such a move would allow the Lakers to retain Rui Hachimura to preserve bench depth, while converting smaller contracts to fine-tune the rotation. However, the viability of this plan remains slim. It is highly unlikely that the Pelicans would agree to part with core pieces for a limited return, and expecting another franchise to miscalculate in a way similar to the deal that brought Doni from Dallas is unrealistic.

Warriors and the seismic moves of the summer

While the Lakers attempt to solve their immediate concerns, the Golden State Warriors are already looking ahead to the offseason with monumental ambitions. According to recent reports, the Bay Area franchise has set its sights on both Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James, searching for an elite partner to maximize the final years of Stephen Curry.

The broader context fuels the speculation. In Milwaukee, Giannis’ patience appears to be wearing thin amid a lack of chemistry and collective effort from the Bucks, a situation that could ultimately lead to a trade request. At the same time, LeBron’s situation in Los Angeles is increasingly tense. Reports pointing to a critical stance from team owner Jeanie Buss and the franchise’s pivot toward Doni suggest that a free-agency “divorce” is within the realm of possibility.

The Warriors, who expect to have a fully healthy Jimmy Butler for the next campaign, have made one thing clear: they will not move their current assets unless the return involves a truly “top-tier” target.
