Leagues Cup to return in 2025 with new format

The Leagues Cup has confirmed in an official statement that it will continue to be played in 2025. Not only that, but it will come with many changes that fans and even Mexican clubs were demanding

When does the Leagues Cup start?

It will take place from July 29 to August 31, and the tournament will be played in the United States and Canada. That’s right, it will not be played in Mexico. Mexican clubs will be forced to travel to the USA or Canada during the week

What are the new features?

The leagues will no longer be stopped (Liga MX and MLS), now the matches would be played during the week

“The matches will emphasise competition between leagues, determined by feedback from fans and clubs, as well as insights from recent studies,” they explained in a statement

Benefits are maintained

The tournament will award three places for the CONCACAF Champions Cup to the first, second and third place finishers.

New format

The president of the Liga MX and interim commissioner of the FMF, Mikel Arriola, said before the final between Monterrey and America that the new format would be like the Champions League

“It stays in the summer with a much lower travel load for our teams, especially knowing that we are going to play more of a Champions League style than going there for a month to stay. We are going to get there on Matchday 5,” he said.

“We are no longer going to concentrate there, we are going to play during the week so that the Mexican teams are not there for so many days to play on the weekend here. We are not going to interrupt Liga MX. The request of the clubs was very clear. We are going to reduce the double matchdays as well,” concluded the president of the Mexican league

For now, there are not many details about the format, as they will be revealed during the first months of 2025

“Details on the participating clubs, match schedule and draw process will be announced next year,” the Leagues Cup Committee wrote.
