LeBron James becomes the punchline of college hoops

In a lopsided 96-67 victory against North Carolina A&T, the Virginia Tech Hokies finally broke a seven-game losing streak. While the game was full of highlights, it was a single point by sophomore guard Conner Venable that stole the spotlight.

Venable, who entered late in the game, earned his first career point by sinking a free throw with just over a minute left in regulation. Despite finishing with only one point, the young player’s post-game comment drew laughter and plenty of attention.

Speaking to his coach, Mike Young, Venable joked, “I have more points in a college game than LeBron James.

The LeBron James college connection or lack thereof

Venable’s statement is undeniably true. LeBron James, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, skipped college entirely, going straight from high school to the NBA as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft.

The joke gained even more traction as LeBron James was sidelined with left knee soreness this week, missing consecutive games for the Los Angeles Lakers. Venable humorously added that he had “scored more this week than LeBron,” referencing James‘ absence from Sunday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers and Friday’s matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

While Venable’s quip brought humor to the post-game discussion, the Hokies‘ performance offered relief to fans after a tough stretch. Their dominant victory at Cassell Coliseum marked just their fourth win of the 2024-25 season, but it was an important morale boost for the team.

As for Venable, his confidence and humor might make him a fan favorite as he continues his college basketball journey. Whether he’ll outscore LeBron in future games remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his first career point has already left a memorable mark.

The Hokies now look to build on this win, but for now, Conner Venable’s one-point performance and the perfectly timed LeBron James joke will go down as a highlight of their season.
