Bryce James, LeBron‘s youngest son, announced his commitment to the University of Arizona Wildcats. While the 17-year-old prepares to showcase his talent on the court in Arizona’s colors, his father, LeBron James, has expressed both pride and concern regarding his son’s next chapter.
Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, LeBron took time to interact with reporters in the locker room.
When asked about Bryce‘s decision, the four-time NBA champion responded with characteristic humor and honesty.
Before addressing the question directly, LeBron playfully pulled out an Ohio State Buckeyes hat from his bag, pretending not to hear the initial question, leaving the room in laughter.
When he finally turned serious, LeBron praised Bryce’s decision-making process.
“It was his decision to make. He went where he felt comfortable,” LeBron said.
He also highlighted the influence of Arizona’s head coach, Tommy Lloyd, in Bryce‘s decision.
“Coach Lloyd‘s a straight shooter,” he added. “[He] gave him exactly what they believe in, gave him exactly what they thought about him as a person and a player. [Bryce is] happy to be a part of the… community.”
A lighthearted dig at old friends
LeBron humorously referenced his former Cleveland Cavaliers teammates, Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye, who both have ties to Arizona.
“Got some terrible friends, Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye,” James noted. “A lot of them there. Not too excited about that. I don’t know, but we are excited to go down.”
The bond between LeBron, Jefferson and Frye was forged during their time with the Cavaliers, where they won the 2016 NBA Championship. Despite moving on from their playing days together, the trio remains close, frequently sharing their banter with fans.
Their connection is still evident in moments like LeBron‘s 2020 appearance on Jefferson‘s podcast, Road Trippin’, where Frye joined virtually.
