Luka Doncic continues to add to a rsum that already places him among the most productive players in NBA history, and another milestone is well within reach.
Luka Doncic mesmerizes Lakers teammates with magic shot
The Slovenian superstar needs just 20 more triple-doubles to pass iconic point guard Jason Kidd for sixth place on the NBA’s all-time list, a mark that appears attainable as soon as next season if he remains healthy.
Kidd, by the way, coached Doncic with the Dallas Mavericks. Both reached the NBA Finals in 2024, but they fell short agains the Boston Celtics. They formed a special bond and it will be special for Jason to see Luka surpass him soon.
Luka chases legendary players
Doncic currently sits seventh all time in triple-doubles. The leaderboard is topped by Russell Westbrook with 207, followed by Oscar Robertson with 181 and Nikola Jokic with 180. Magic Johnson ranks fourth with 138, LeBron James is fifth with 122 and Kidd holds the sixth spot with 107.
Doncic‘s rapid climb up that list underscores his all-around impact and the pace at which he continues to rewrite franchise and league history. That production has been especially noticeable in January. Luka is averaging 33.2 points per game this month and has scored at least 30 points in eight of his 11 games since the calendar turned.
He remains the NBA’s scoring leader while also serving as one of the league’s most consistent creators and rebounders, a combination that continues to fuel his triple-double totals. If the Los Angeles Lakers want to be title contenders, they will need every ounce of talent from Luka.
Doncic has been dominant
Doncic’s dominance has also kept him firmly in the MVP conversation. According to NBA.com analyst Shaun Powell, he currently ranks third on the MVP Ladder, reflecting both his individual numbers and his value to the Mavericks‘ offense on a nightly basis.
LeBron James recently pointed to Doncic’s comfort level as a key factor in his continued rise, noting his understanding of the system, the city and his leadership role within the team. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that Doni has fully embraced the present and is focused on what comes next.
With his scoring efficiency, playmaking consistency and growing command of the game, Doncic‘s pursuit of Kidd on the all-time triple-double list feels less like a question of if and more like when.
