Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic is facing a rough patch both on and off the court. After suffering a Grade 2 calf strain during a Christmas Day matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic now finds himself dealing with a home burglary that occurred while he was away with his team in Phoenix.
News of the break-in has NBA fans buzzing online. While some expressed sympathy for Doncic, others couldn’t resist turning the incident into a lighthearted discussion.
Fans react to shocking news with theories and humor
“Dude, why are all these athletes’ homes getting burglarized so much recently?” one fan questioned in disbelief.
Another noted, “Unfortunate, man. Luka just started a charity foundation, and now this happens.”
However, the conversation quickly took a humorous turn, with several fans pointing fingers, jokingly, at Doncic’s on-court rival, Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns.
“It was Devin Booker,” one fan joked, referencing Booker‘s absence from Friday’s game against the Mavericks. Another added, “Booker didn’t play last night; suspicious timing!”
A growing problem for professional athletes
Unfortunately, Doncic’s ordeal isn’t an isolated incident. A growing number of professional athletes have reported home burglaries in recent months, often while they were traveling for games.
Notable cases include Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, who both experienced break-ins at their homes in October. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley’s house was also burglarized in September while he attended a Minnesota Vikings game.
In November, Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis became another victim, prompting him to offer a $40,000 reward for information on the crime. Most recently, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s home was targeted on December 9 while he was on the road for a game in Texas.
A silver lining for the Mavericks
Despite missing Doncic, the Mavericks managed a 98-89 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday. Kyrie Irving led the team with 20 points, while Kevin Durant delivered an impressive 35-point performance for the Suns.
As Doncic continues his recovery and deals with the aftermath of the burglary, fans remain hopeful that both his health and security situation will improve soon.
