In July 2023, Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie joined the ownership group that purchased the Washington Commanders for a record-breaking $6.05 billion. Magic, who invested $240 million for a four percent stake, made it clear from the outset that this venture was more than just a business deal.
Fast forward a few months, and the Commanders’ historic playoff victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January 2024 has proven that Magic’s vision and leadership are making an impact.
For the first time in nearly two decades, the Commanders broke a 6,945-day playoff drought with a nail-biting 23-20 win, clinching their first playoff victory since 2005.
A fresh start
The Commanders’ success was made possible by swift changes following the new ownership’s arrival. With new leadership in both the front office and on the sidelines, the franchise was able to turn the page.
However, the most critical factor in their playoff return was the acquisition of a franchise quarterback, a position that had long been a weakness for the team.

The game itself was a dramatic one. With time running out, Jayden Daniels scrambled to secure a crucial first down, setting the stage for Zane Gonzalez‘s heart-stopping 37-yard field goal. As the ball bounced off the upright and dropped through as time expired, the Commanders‘ sideline erupted in jubilation. Magic and Cookie Johnson were right there to share the emotional moment, soaking in the excitement.
Magic’s joyous celebration
Magic took to Instagram to express his excitement.
“What a win for our Commanders tonight! Another last-second field goal to get our franchise’s first Playoff win since 2005,” he posted.
The win was just the beginning for Magic and the Commanders. Following their dramatic victory, they now face their next challenge: a divisional-round showdown with the top-seeded Detroit Lions.
“We are so excited to head back home to Michigan for our next matchup against the Lions!” Magic wrote, clearly fired up about the upcoming game.
