Magic Johnson makes hard statement on Bronny James

Magic Johnson has offered a candid opinion on Bronny James‘ readiness for the NBA, suggesting that the young player should spend a season in the G League before joining the Los Angeles Lakers.

During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the NBA legend explained that while many are eager to see LeBron James and his son take the court together in the 2024-25 season, he believes Bronny would benefit from more development time.

“If I’m Bronny, I would tell my dad, ‘just let me play in the G League all season so that I can develop,'” Johnson advised.

He emphasized that consistent playing time, which Bronny may not get on the Lakers bench, would be key to his growth.

“He needs playing time. He doesn’t need to be sitting on the Laker bench and not playing,” Johnson added.

However, Johnson was quick to clarify that this isn’t a critique of Bronny‘s talent but a recommendation for his long-term success.

“That’s not a knock against him, he’s just not ready,” Johnson said. “He needs to develop more and then he will be ready because he has some great talent and skills, but he needs to develop those skills at a much better clip if he wants to play 15-20 minutes a night in the NBA or more.”

History with the Lakers

When Kimmel questioned whether LeBron might be pushing for Bronny to join the Lakers so they can make history as the first father-son duo to play together in the NBA, Johnson said he wasn’t sure.

However, he trusts that LeBron will prioritize what’s best for Bronny’s career over making a sentimental move.

Although Johnson no longer holds an official role with the Lakers, his deep connection with the team makes his opinion significant.

Meanwhile, Lakers head coach JJ Redick recently indicated that Bronny would spend significant time in the G League but hinted that fans could see him on the court with his father “sooner rather than later.”
