Reeves and The Batman Part II
The eyes of the cinema world are currently on Matt Reeves’ long-anticipated follow-up to 2022’s The Batman. Details on the sequel are sparse, but Reeves has previously teased that the villain has “never really been done in a movie before.“ Robert Pattinson will once again suit up as Batman, and it’s expected that Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell will also return as Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, and the Penguin, respectively. There have also been rumblings that Tobias Menzies is circling a role in the film.
A new historical project in development
According to Deadline, in addition to working on The Batman Part II, Reeves and his company, 6th & Idaho, are developing a period film about the wartime summit in Moscow around 1942, which had Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin meet for “a pivotal moment that led to the Allied victory three years later.” Reeves’ film will be based on a script by historian and screenwriter Simon Sebag Montefiore. Montefiore has written two books about Stalin, which include a book on the Romanov dynasty, as well as three books that detail the era of 20th-century Russia. He also wrote the screenplay to an upcoming biopic about Stalin, titled Young Stalin.
The author and scriptwriter stated, “This movie is the culmination of a lifelong interest in Stalin and the script tells the inside story of his encounter with Churchill over just a few days, during which time the fate of the entire world hangs by a thread.” He continued, “We talk today about strong leaders, who have complete command. In Stalin and Churchill you have two of the very strongest leaders in history, who come together as the world is being torn apart. It is a portrait of two men and a portrait of power.”
Lynn Harris, a producing partner of Reeves at his 6th & Idaho company, stated, “This is a wonderful story and a wonderful script.”
Reeves and collaborators
It was recently confirmed by Reeves that he will be working with Erik Messerschmidt as the DP on The Batman: Part II. Messerschmidt is best known for his collaborations with David Fincher, having shot Mank, The Killer, and Mindhunter. He’s recently worked on The Adventures of Cliff Booth. He also shot Devotion for director J. D. Dillard and Ferrari for Michael Mann.
