Chanel has finally ended its six-month search for a new Creative Director. Matthieu Blazy, formerly with Bottega Veneta, has been chosen to take on the prestigious role.
Blazy, who left Bottega Veneta just hours before the announcement, will now oversee all of Chanel’s fashion, couture, and accessories.
Blazy, who joined Bottega Veneta in 2021, will present 10 collections a year for Chanel. His first show is set for Paris Fashion Week next October.
“We have a lot of confidence in Matthieu’s capacity to bring modernity and a different approach to Chanel,” said Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel’s president of fashion, in an interview with The New York Times. Pavlovsky praised Blazy as “a talent for tomorrow” and highlighted his respect for Chanel’s heritage, combined with his distinctive designs for ready-to-wear, silhouettes, and accessories.
Blazy shared his excitement in a statement to WWD, saying, “I am thrilled and honored to join the wonderful house of Chanel. I look forward to meeting all the teams and writing this new chapter together…”
According to Chanel’s global leaders, Alain Wertheimer and Leena Nair, Blazy stood out as the top choice among several highly talented designers. Pavlovsky noted that Blazy’s track record, vision for Chanel, and ability to balance modernity with respect for the brand’s heritage made him the ideal fit.
Blazy is the fourth official Creative Director in Chanel’s history, succeeding Virginie Viard, who left the brand in June. Meanwhile, Louise Trotter has been announced as Blazy’s replacement at Bottega Veneta.
