Mac McClung‘s story is one that needs to be told. The American point guard for the Osceola Magic, Orlando’s G-League affiliate, has once again won his third consecutive slam dunk contest at the NBA All-Star Game. The 26-year-old scored four 50s on all of his attempts to dunk the rim and beat all of his rivals.
The player once again demonstrated his great ability to penetrate and make a perfect dunk. McClung is 6’2″ and showed his ingenuity and strength to become the dunk contest champion once again. The story behind all this is quite curious. The Magic point guard has earned more money from All-Star contests than from his NBA contracts. The specialized portal ‘Spotrac’, points out that his salary in the Magic’s affiliate is not extremely high. The NBA distributes about $100,000 to the winner of each edition’s dunk contest. If we take into account that McClung has won the last three, it is estimated that he has pocketed an amount close to $310,000, much more than in his contracts
According to this portal, McClung’s salary is around $132,000 a year. This is a very low amount compared to the earnings he takes home each year as a dunk contest champion. McClung has earned most of his NBA deals through the ‘two way’ formula, which allows a player to sign for an NBA team but have the possibility of playing games with the affiliate. It is a two-way contract in which the player can participate in a maximum of 50 games per season. Since 2021, McClung has played only five games in the best league in the world. This season, the point guard is averaging 17.4 points as one of the standout players for the Osceola Magic.
