Michael Gallup has taken the tough decision to retire from the NFL despite potentially having a chance of playing for the Las Vegas Raiders next season.

The 28-year-old was placed on the reserve/retired list on Tuesday by the Raiders but he has made the call not to fight for a place on the roster.

Gallup spent six seasons playing for the Dallas Cowboys and that is the team that he is most associated with, but he was released at the end of last season and was searching for a new club.

Injuries have plagued his career which had a lot of promise in the early days.

Gallup was a 1,000-yard receiver with the Cowboys in 2019, which was his best season as he finished with 1,107 yards and six touchdowns (16.8 yards per catch).

He started 67 of 86 games with the Cowboys, having 266 catches for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns (14.1 yards per catch).

He became a victim of the Cowboys needing to make space for the salary cap in March. He had three years and $45.55 million remaining on his contract when he was released by the Cowboys.

He signed a one-year deal with the Raiders in May that was worth around three million dollars.

Dak Prescott spoke very positively about Gallup’s chances of a meaningful comeback in May 2023.

“Just for him to get into this offseason, get his body right, and now just starting to come back into who Michael Gallup is and feel himself, I think what you just saw is a couple of plays right there of doing that consecutively,” Prescott said.

“But that’s a guy that I’ve got a lot of trust in. I know who he is, and more importantly, how he works and comes to work each and every day to get better. He’s getting his feet under him, and he’s going to be better.”
