The University of North Carolina has made one of the boldest and most unconventional coaching decisions in recent college basketball history by hiring former NBA head coach Michael Malone as the next leader of its men’s basketball program.
The announcement comes after a dramatic and unexpected search following a shocking March Madness upset that led to the dismissal of Hubert Davis. After losing to VCU in the first round, UNC decided it was time for a fresh direction.
Malone, who led the Denver Nuggets to the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2023, had been out of coaching since his departure from Denver in April 2025. He spent the 2025-26 season working as a studio analyst for ESPN, covering pregame and postgame NBA shows.
His hire represents a rare move: he is the first NBA head coach with no recent collegiate head coaching experience to take over an NCAA program since Mike Woodson joined Indiana in 2021.
UNC’s decision followed a series of high-profile rejections from established college coaches. Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, Florida’s Todd Golden, Vanderbilt’s Mark Byington, Alabama’s Nate Oats, Michigan’s Dusty May, and UConn’s Dan Hurley all turned down the offer for various reasons, from contract extensions to personal preferences.
Even potential NBA-to-college moves, including Billy Donovan returning to the college ranks or Brad Stevens leaving the Celtics, did not materialize, leaving the Tar Heels to look beyond the usual pool of candidates.

Malone‘s professional record is impressive. During his time with the Nuggets, he accumulated over 500 wins and established a reputation as a coach who can manage talent, develop players, and succeed in high-pressure situations.
While he has not been a collegiate head coach, his experience as an assistant at Oakland University, Providence College, and Manhattan College, as well as a brief tenure as Virginia’s director of basketball operations, gives him familiarity with the college basketball environment.
Adding a personal layer to the story, Malone has a direct connection to Chapel Hill: his daughter is a student and volleyball player at UNC. This connection could provide him with unique insight into campus culture and student-athlete dynamics, potentially easing his transition from professional to collegiate coaching.
