The Majorana 1 chip leverages topoconductors, a new material capable of observing and controlling Majorana particles, thereby producing reliable and scalable qubits. Microsoft’s technical fellow, Chetan Nayak, emphasized the strategic innovation behind this development, likening it to inventing the transistor for the quantum era. The new materials stack, composed of indium arsenide and aluminum, allows for the creation of Majorana particles, which are essential for the chip’s operation.
