Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is a ‘victim’ of his circumstances, according to Colin Cowherd.
McCarthy won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers back in 2010 but left in 2018 with the narrative surrounding him that he never quite managed to extract the Packers‘ full potential during Aaron Rodgers‘ prime years.
The Packers achieved nine playoff seasons in 13 years under McCarthy, who oversaw the transition between Brett Favre and Rodgers.
Since linking up with the Cowboys in 2020, McCarthy has managed three playoff seasons in four campaigns in charge, and his last three seasons with the Cowboys have all yielded 12-5 seasons.
The Cowboys have not been able to get over the playoff hump, losing two Wild Card games and one Divisional game.
But McCarthy’s reputation of not consistently being able to get his teams over the line is an unfair one, according to sports host Cowherd.
“McCarthy‘s playoff record is 11 and 11. It is in line with the all-time greats except Belichick and Andy because they have the two best quarterbacks ever and my argument is, Mike is a bit of a victim of making small mistakes with huge brands,” said Cowherd of Mike McCarthy’s situation on his show The Herd with Colin Cowherd.
Jones defends McCarthy
Packers fans may have mixed feelings for McCarthy on the whole, but pundit and Cheese Head James Jones believes some of the criticism is unfair.
“The disrespect that coach Mike gets, you come into an organization with the Green Bay Packers who were terrible when you got the job,” said Jones. “I want to say 4 and 12 when you got the job, whatever it may be. You come in there with Brett Favre you go, your first season, average, you got to the NFC Championship and you’re 13 and 3,” said the Cheesehead James Jones of Mike McCarthy.
“Then you go on to win a bunch of games, go to the Super Bowl, win the Super Bowl, back to the NFC Championship games, 15 and 1 seasons. Then you go to the Dallas Cowboys and in three years, you go 12-12-12, something that has never been done….in the history of the Dallas Cowboys. Listen, whoever comes to the Dallas Cowboys, they have this target on their back because you ain’t been to the NFC championship in 30 years, well coach Mike only been there for 3 years, and he’s had you with an opportunity in the playoffs to have a chance to compete. He ain’t been here 30 years, he can’t erase 30 years.”
