The Cleveland Browns are set to interview former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel on Monday, adding a proven offensive mind to their growing list of head-coaching candidates.
McDaniel, who was fired by Miami last week, had already been on Cleveland’s radar before the Browns dismissed Kevin Stefanski one week ago.
The Browns have long admired McDaniel’s offensive creativity and view the meeting as a chance to hear his plan for repairing a unit that struggled throughout last season.
The interview will include discussions about Cleveland’s quarterback direction, offensive line upgrades and improvements at wide receiver, according to league sources.
McDaniel would receive a blank check to revamp the offense
Browns general manager Andrew Berry has pledged to devote significant resources to rebuilding the offense this offseason.
McDaniel previously worked for the Browns in 2014 as wide receivers coach under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, giving him familiarity with the organization.
He becomes the first former head coach – outside of internal candidate Jim Schwartz – to interview with Cleveland during the search.
The Browns are the best option for McDaniel
While McDaniel is also expected to meet with the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland may be his best opportunity for an immediate return to a head-coaching role.
The Browns are also expected to interview former Ravens coach John Harbaugh before making any final decision.
The Browns are not expected to rush the process, but McDaniel’s interview represents a notable step as Cleveland evaluates experienced options to lead its next phase.
