The NBA players’ association are ready to take on the Miami Heat over the suspension handed out to Jimmy Butler.
The Heat suspended Butler, who requested a trade and earlier this week said he’d “probably not” have “joy” in playing for the team, for seven games, citing “multiple instances” of “conduct detrimental to the team.”
As a result the NBAPA have stepped in, stating they intend to fight the ban which is slated to cost Butler $346,543 per game, which comes out to about $2.35 million.
“The 7-game suspension imposed tonight by the Miami Heat on Jimmy Butler is excessive and inappropriate,” the NBPA posted on X. “And we intend to file a grievance challenging the discipline.”
Tension high between Butler and the Heat
The suspension is the latest incident in the ongoing saga between the Heat and Butler.
After a report stating that Butler had requested emerged, team president Pat Riley said in a press conference that the Heat had no intention of trading Butler.
However the team’s statement on Friday says they are now open to moving on from the 14-year NBA veteran.
“We have suspended Jimmy Butler for seven games for multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team over the course of the season and particularly the last several weeks,” the Heat’s statement read.
“Through his actions and statements, he has shown he no longer wants to be part of this team.
“Jimmy Butler and his representative have indicated that they wish to be traded, therefore, we will listen to offers.”
The Heat currently have a 17-15 record ahead of Saturday night’s game with the Jazz, which Butler will miss as part of his suspension.
“I want to see me getting my joy back playing basketball. Wherever that may be, we’ll find out here pretty soon,” Butler told reporters after the Heat’s loss to the Pacers on Thursday.
“I’m happy here off the court, but I want to be back to somewhat dominant, I want to hoop, and I want to help this team win, and right now I’m not doing it.”
