NFL ratings numbers revealed for 2024: Cause for concern or normal variance?

The NFL’s 2024 season came with a twist-ratings took a small dip. After a banner year in 2023 that saw viewership soar by 7%, the league saw a 2.2% decrease in average viewers per game, according to Front Office Sports. But let’s not overreact. Even with the slight drop, the NFL continued to dominate screens across America, leaving all other programming in the dust.

One big reason for the dip? Politics. Presidential election years have historically drawn eyeballs away from even the most compelling TV events, and 2024 was no exception. Between debates and election coverage, it’s no surprise the NFL’s numbers slid a bit before Election Day.

While TV viewership was down, streaming was up. Amazon’s Thursday Night Football coverage saw an 11% bump in its third season, averaging 13.2 million viewers. Add the Black Friday game into the mix, and that number grew to 13%. Clearly, fans are getting more comfortable tuning in online, signaling a shift in how people watch football.

The most-watched game of the season? Thanksgiving’s late-afternoon matchup between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. Neither team had a winning record-the Giants were 2-9, and the Cowboys sat at 4-7-but the rivalry still pulled in massive numbers. It’s a testament to how the NFL can turn even lackluster matchups into must-watch TV.

NFL’s reign continues: Football stays king despite slight viewership dip

Despite the slight drop, the NFL’s dominance remained unshaken. Of the top 15 broadcasts in 2024, 13 were NFL games. Only a Presidential Debate and the Oscars managed to sneak into the rankings. Even the Summer Olympics couldn’t keep up, with its best showing landing at No. 16.

Sure, a 2.2% decline isn’t ideal, but let’s not forget the context. After a record-setting 2023, some regression was expected. Add in an election year and the growing trend of streaming, and it’s clear the NFL is still thriving.

If anything, 2024 highlighted the league’s ability to adapt. Whether it’s traditional TV or streaming platforms, the NFL continues to be America’s go-to entertainment. It’s safe to say that no one-not politics, award shows, or the Olympics-can knock football off its throne.
