NVIDIA’s Earth-2 platform, in collaboration with UAE-based AI and cloud computing company G42, is at the forefront of this innovation, providing high-resolution weather forecasting to combat challenges posed by severe climatic conditions.
Addressing Climatic Challenges with AI
In recent years, the UAE has experienced a significant increase in extreme weather events, including severe rainfall, dense fog, and intense heat. Traditional global weather models often lack the resolution necessary to effectively predict weather patterns specific to the UAE. To fill this gap, G42 utilized NVIDIA’s Earth-2 platform to develop a generative AI forecasting system, capable of producing detailed regional weather predictions at a resolution of up to 200 meters.
Advanced AI Forecasting Techniques
G42’s forecasting system employs NVIDIA’s CorrDiff architecture within the PhysicsNeMo framework, enabling the downscaling of global weather data to a more granular level. This system, trained on NVIDIA’s cluster of H100 GPUs, can deliver nationwide forecasts at a 2-kilometer resolution within minutes, a significant improvement over traditional methods that take hours.
The enhanced AI system also includes a second variant of the CorrDiff model, providing hyperlocal forecasts for Abu Dhabi at a 200-meter resolution. This feature captures the intricate interactions between geographic and urban factors, offering a comprehensive understanding of local weather dynamics.
