Mexican striker Hirving “Chucky” Lozano has been officially confirmed as a new player for San Diego FC. The announcement was made via the team’s official social media channels on Thursday, making a significant splash even before the team has played its first match in Major League Soccer (MLS).
San Diego FC celebrated their first major signing with a video featuring Lozano and his family, highlighting the significant impact of this acquisition. Lozano, a 28-year-old forward, joins the new MLS outfit as a marquee player, bringing his experience as a Serie A winner with Napoli and Eredivisie winner during his time with PSV in the Netherlands.
Lozano began his professional career with Pachuca’s youth academy and quickly became a fan favorite for the Mexican national team. He moved to PSV, where he made a historic transfer to Napoli.
With Napoli, he was part of the squad that won the Serie A title in 2022-23, and he also played a crucial role in PSV‘s recent success, taking the crown from Feyenoord, the team of fellow Mexican Santiago Gimenez.
Role as a Designated Player
Details about the length of Lozano‘s contract with San Diego FC have yet to be disclosed. However, it is confirmed that he joins the club as a Designated Player, a status that allows MLS teams to sign high-profile players outside the salary cap restrictions.
There are also rumors that San Diego FC is pursuing other high-profile signings, including goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.
San Diego FC is still in the process of finalizing their coaching staff, with possible candidates including Hugo Sanchez or Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera, former coach of Club America and Club Tijuana.
