Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense are about to receive more help within the coaching staff. According to reports from CBS Sports and NFL insider Jordan Schultz, DeMarco Murray has accepted the position of running backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.

CBS Sports was the first outlet to report that Murray had emerged as one of the top candidates for the vacancy, and later Schultz confirmed that the hiring had already been finalized-although the NFL team has not yet made an official announcement.

Six seasons at Oklahoma

DeMarco Murray completed six seasons as Oklahoma Sooners running backs coach after joining the staff in 2020 under Lincoln Riley and continuing under Brent Venables. During his tenure, he helped develop several NFL-caliber running backs and was a key recruiter for the Oklahoma football program.

In 2023, the Oklahoma Sooners led the Big 12 in points scored and total offense, while in 2022 they boasted the conference’s top rushing offense, powered by Eric Gray. Players like Kennedy Brooks and Rhamondre Stevenson also stood out before reaching the NFL.

His departure marks the third assistant coaching change for Oklahoma football this offseason.

DeMarco Murray was one of the greatest running backs in Oklahoma history, amassing 3,685 rushing yards and 50 rushing touchdowns, along with two First-Team All-Big 12 selections.

Selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2011 NFL Draft, he played seven NFL seasons, earned three Pro Bowl selections, and was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2014. After retiring in 2018, he began his coaching career at Arizona football in 2019 before returning to Oklahoma Sooners in 2020.
