In response to a third consecutive loss in the AFC Divisional Round, the Buffalo Bills have undertaken a significant overhaul of their offensive roster. Key changes include parting ways with top receivers Stefon Diggs, who was traded to the Houston Texans, and Gabe Davis, who signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team also released Pro Bowl center Mitch Morse, signaling a fresh start.
To rebuild the receiving corps, General Manager Brandon Beane selected a wide receiver from Florida State with the 33rd overall pick and brought in veteran wideouts Curtis Samuel, Chase Claypool, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
Kansas City Chiefs quadruple pass
Despite these additions, a report from Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic indicates that Valdes-Scantling is struggling during training camp and may not make the final roster.
“As camp has gone on, there are clear signs that the top five may only be four, with Valdes-Scantling needing to battle his way back into it,” Buscaglia said. “Valdes-Scantling has faded into the background in the last few practices. He has yet to make a strong impression in the passing game during team drills, and his opportunities with quarterback Josh Allen and the top unit have dwindled.”
Looking to bounce back
Valdes-Scantling, who joined the Bills on a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs, had been a part of the Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl-winning teams.
Last season, he recorded 21 receptions for 315 yards and one touchdown. His career-high season came in 2020 with 33 catches for 690 yards and six touchdowns.
As the Bills look to bounce back from their recent playoff disappointments, the success of their revamped offense will be crucial. The team opens the season against Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1, followed by a “Thursday Night Football” clash with the Miami Dolphins, a key AFC East rival. This season marks a pivotal moment for the Bills as they aim to translate these roster changes into postseason success.
