It’s a bit of a tradition in the NFL world for offensive linemen to receive gifts from their quarterbacks, as a way of thanking them for protecting the most important player in the franchise. The gifts can range from extravagant to funny, but they are generally expensive given how much money high-level quarterbacks make. But when a QB on a 7th round rookie contract does it, it catches the attention of fans.
That’s what happened this week, when Brock Purdy gifted his o-line 10 brand new trucks despite only making $985,000 this season. Thankfully, Purdy has a sponsorship deal with Toyota, so they likely fronted most of, if not all, the costs. Naturally, the San Francisco 49ers social media team captured the moment and posted it. But that type of content has rubbed some the wrong way, including a former Kansas City Chiefs teammate of Patrick Mahomes: Mitchell Schwartz.
Mitchell Schwartz believes QB gifts for offensive linemen should be kept a secret

Schwartz is a former right tackle who spent four seasons with the Cleveland Browns before joining the Chiefs. He was there from 2016 to 2020, overlapping with Mahomes. The Chiefs showed off Mahomes’ gift this year for his linemen, and Schwartz felt compelled to call them out.
Schwartz also responded to several fans in the comments section, with the main reasoning for his argument being that the gifts are personal and should be kept that way unless the players themselves choose to post about it.
As Schwartz points out, he has the right to say something because he has literally received gifts from Mahomes himself. He believes social media departments from NFL teams only share it to garner engagement. You would assume that the team asks the QB if it’s okay to share, but we might never really know.
