Patrick Mahomes sparks new injury concerns amid unusual update from the Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes did not look noticeably slow or worse for wear as he guided the Kansas City Chiefs to a 27-19 win over the Houston Texans in Week 16 NFL action. The Chiefs‘ superstar quarterback accounted for 293 total yards and two touchdowns — including one on the ground — as Kansas City improved its NFL-best record to 14-1.

But as the Chiefs close in on the AFC‘s #1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, concerns are mounting over Kansas City’s viability as a Super Bowl contender come January. Some of that concern boils down to whether the Chiefs can make NFL history as the league’s first-ever Super Bowl “three-peat” winner; the rest of it centers on Mahomes’ high-ankle sprain, which threatens to linger entering the postseason.

Mahomes’ status is an “estimation”

The Chiefs on Sunday published a curious injury report, the day after Kansas City won its 11th one-score game of the season. The report was characterized as an “estimation“, as the team received the day off Sunday.

Mahomes was listed as a probable “full participant” when the Chiefs return to the practice field amidst unusual circumstances; Kansas City played Saturday and will play again Wednesday, Christmas Day, when the two-time defending Super Bowl champions visit Pittsburgh to play the stingy Steelers.

Star defensive tackle Chris Jones‘ status is considered more doubtful than Mahomes; Jones is “questionable” for the historic Christmas game, as the All-Pro tackle has picked up a calf strain. But if Mahomes is healthy, Kansas City is able to beat anybody — and it seems like the two-time MVP is successfully going to shrug off concerns centered on his ankle’s structural integrity.
