The Baltimore Ravens‘ defensive overhaul took an unexpected turn this week, but one key development should calm jitters among the fan base: veteran edge rusher Trey Hendrickson has officially passed his physical and is cleared to join the team under the terms of his new contract.
The news arrives against the backdrop of one of the more dramatic roster sagas of the early 2026 NFL offseason, which saw Baltimore abruptly back out of what could have been the franchise’s biggest trade in years, a proposed deal for Raiders star Maxx Crosby.
That trade collapsed after Crosby failed his physical, prompting the Ravens to pivot toward the free-agent market and ultimately land Hendrickson on a four-year, $112million contract.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter confirmed that Hendrickson passed his medical evaluation and was cleared to finalize the agreement.
Shortly afterward, the Ravens‘ official social media accounts announced the signing, sharing images of Hendrickson wearing a Baltimore jersey.
The contract represents a significant investment in the Ravens‘ defensive front. Hendrickson‘s four-year deal is valued at $112 million, signaling that Baltimore believes the veteran edge rusher can play a major role in strengthening its pass rush.
Before arriving in Baltimore, Hendrickson built a reputation as one of the league’s most productive pass rushers. The 31-year-old recorded back-to-back seasons with 17.5 sacks and earned four consecutive Pro Bowl selections, establishing himself as a disruptive presence off the edge.
However, the 2025 season presented challenges. Hendrickson underwent core-muscle surgery in December, which limited him to seven games and just four sacks. The injury, combined with ongoing contract frustrations, created uncertainty about his long-term future with Cincinnati.
Baltimore pivots after failed Crosby trade
The Ravens‘ pursuit of Hendrickson was closely tied to bigger changes along their roster.
According to general manager Eric DeCosta, the team had originally hoped to build a defensive line that featured both Crosby and Hendrickson. That possibility disappeared once the trade with Las Vegas fell apart.
“I didn’t really look at him as like, ‘Oh, we’ll do this because of that,'” DeCosta explained when discussing the decision. “It was really more, ‘How do we get better as a football team?'”
He added that Baltimore began exploring the move more seriously after losing center Tyler Linderbaum, who departed in free agency to join the Las Vegas Raiders.
“We’re trying to find the best way for us to get better as a football team, Trey made a lot of sense,” DeCosta said. “We started discussions with him and his agent thinking we could potentially have two pass rushers on the defensive line.”
Even with last season’s injury setbacks, Hendrickson‘s rsum still reflects elite pass-rushing ability. His combination of speed, technique, and relentless motor has made him one of the more consistent edge defenders of the past several seasons.
The Ravens will continue evaluating additional roster moves as free agency progresses and the NFL Draft approaches. But after the disappointment of the failed Crosby trade, Baltimore has secured a proven pass rusher who could play a major role in the team’s push toward another postseason run.
