The move has sparked widespread backlash, with fans and analysts questioning whether this hire reflects a lack of ambition from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III summed up the frustration.
“The Dallas Cowboys aren’t serious about winning,” he stated.
Griffin‘s sentiment echoes the broader reaction online, where many have criticized Jones for opting for what they perceive as a “safe” hire over a bold or proven candidate.
The Cowboys reportedly interviewed high-profile names such as Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, former Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier, and even Colorado’s Deion Sanders.
Yet, they ultimately chose Schottenheimer, a self-described “career assistant.” This decision has led many to question the team’s priorities and vision for the future.
“The Cowboys were America’s No. 1 sports brand, but you might as well just give that to the Packers, give that to the Kansas City Chiefs. Hand it over, it’s done. You’re no longer America’s team,” Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd said.
“This is nothing against the coach, but this is someone who is not up for other jobs. I’m speechless. The Cowboys’ decision-making in the front office is incredible. This is a franchise stuck in the past.”
For Jerry Jones, this hiring is a significant gamble. Schottenheimer is known for his steady but unspectacular coaching rsum, leading many to believe he won’t deliver the kind of bold leadership needed to take the Cowboys back to championship glory.
