Ridley Scott director cuts
Ridley Scott is an epic director. He’s a man who does period films to the nth degree and while his theatrical releases usually have lengthy runtimes, his true vision usually has more meat on it. Back when Gladiator II was released, we here at JoBlo released a Top 5 list of Ridley Scott’s best director’s cuts of his films. Our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, would include films like Kingdom of Heaven, Blade Runner, American Gangster, Legend and The Counselor. It stands to reason that a director’s cut of Gladiator II is in our future, but is there another one that we may have missed? Russell Crowe thinks so.
Russell Crowe on Robin Hood Director’s Cut
On X, Cinema Tweets would say that Robin Hood received unfair comparisons to Gladiator and the film deserves more attention. Russell Crowe himself would respond with a post that read,
The directors cut is the movie we all thought we were releasing. However, 17 minutes were cut for the cinema release. A minute is a long time on screen. Imagine any of your favourite movies with 17 minutes of the most emotional connective tissue removed… watch the directors cut”
Following his post, a user with the hilarious name, Shaggy Dawg with Deep Thoughts, added their own impression of the film and felt that the movie was underrated. They would also point out how it felt more like a Robin Hood origin story. Crowe replied by saying,
That was the idea. To be told in 3 parts. When I started digging in to RH, I found the story and its roots in Greene Man mythology deeply interesting. The tale of Robin lasted hundreds of years, how ? It was my idea to show that RH was a title, passed down, not one man.”
Next for Crowe
While Crowe isn’t announced to be working with Scott anytime soon, he has an upcoming MMA project titled Beast, which has recently released a trailer. In addition to starring in Beast, Crowe also co-wrote the script with David Frigerio (Muzzle). The film is directed by Tyler Atkins (Ocean Boy). The rest of the cast is rounded out by Luke Hemsworth (Westworld), Bren Foster (The Last Ship), Amy Shark (Love, Simon), Mojean Aria (The Enforcer), Kelly Gale (Plane).
The official synopsis reads: “After years away from the cage, a once-feared MMA champion is pulled back in for the fight of his life when his younger brother is put in danger. Reuniting with the trainer who once made him a legend, he commits to one final showdown against the reigning title-holder — a brutal fighter determined to dismantle the ex-champ’s legacy in front of the world. Pushed to his breaking point, the contender’s stakes are simple: win, or lose everything he’s built.“
Beast will hit theaters on April 10.
