Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, continue to make waves in the sports world with their latest venture, as they’ve acquired Colombian soccer team, La Equidad. Teaming up with actresses Eva Longoria and Kate Upton, Reynolds and McElhenney are set to transform the Bogota-based club, much like their successful turnaround of Wrexham A.F.C.
The consortium, led by real estate investor Al Tylis and former DC United executive Sam Porter, has acquired more than 99% of La Equidad for a reported $30 million. This marks Reynolds and McElhenney’s third soccer club investment, following their ownership of Wrexham and a minority stake in Mexican club Club Necaxa.
La Equidad, based in Bogota, has been playing in Colombia’s top league, Primera A, since 2007. The team plays its home matches at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, which has a capacity of 10,000 spectators. The club finished 13th in the 2024 season, and the new owners are optimistic about enhancing the team’s performance and growth.
Plenty of celebrities are a part of the deal
Joining Reynolds and McElhenney in this venture are Eva Longoria, Kate Upton, former NBA player Shawn Marion, and baseball star Justin Verlander. While most of these celebrities are not expected to be heavily involved in day-to-day operations, their investment highlights the growing trend of celebrities investing in soccer clubs.
Reynolds and McElhenney have expressed their enthusiasm for the acquisition, citing their previous success with Wrexham as a motivating factor. The Hollywood duo has poured millions of dollars into Wrexham, leading to back-to-back promotions and a real shot at reaching the Championship level. They hope to replicate this success with La Equidad and further expand their influence in the soccer world.
The purchase of La Equidad adds another exciting chapter to Reynolds and McElhenney’s journey in soccer ownership. With a strong investor group and a clear vision for growth, the future looks promising for the Bogota-based club.
