After Rayados de Monterrey were eliminated in the semifinals of the Apertura 2025 by Club Deportivo Toluca, Sergio Ramos’ departure from the Mexican team has been confirmed. This decision was not a last-minute impulse or disagreement, as the Spanish defender had been thinking about returning to Europe for months, despite having become one of Monterrey’s leaders
Sources close to Sergio Ramos said that the defender did not even want to listen to offers from the Rayados board, who were keen to extend his contract, which ends on December 31, 2025. His time in Liga MX saw him play 34 games and score eight goals, where he remained competitive and even became captain of the team, but he did not win any titles.

Monterrey’s stance on Sergio Ramos: negotiations open, but no path to renewal
The announcement of Sergio Ramos’ departure after Rayados’ elimination took some fans by surprise, but not the board. Tato Noriega, the club’s sporting president, admitted that the end of the relationship with the Spaniard was imminent:
There was a difficulty in renewing by mutual agreement… negotiations were open some time ago and we knew that there was no possibility of continuing
Tato Noriega
Although there was constant dialogue between the player and the board, both agreed that their paths did not align for a renewal, although there were no internal problems or serious differences in the institution, so Noriega was clear:
He made the decision to bring that ending forward and make it known. There was nothing to correct
Tato Noriega
Why did Sergio Ramos not want to continue in the Liga MX with Rayados de Monterrey?
The main reason for Sergio Ramos is that he wants to return to Europe and stay in the spotlight of international soccer to join a project in the old continent that meets his expectations. The Spanish defender’s entourage made it clear that he still has the level to compete in tournaments and assume leading roles outside of Liga MX.
Rayados, for their part, have lost their captain, who played 3,019 minutes in the Monterrey jersey and although his departure left a void for many fans, there were others who were annoyed and grateful that he left their team. The truth is that Sergio Ramos had a brief spell with Rayados in which he consolidated himself as one of their main players and despite not winning a championship, he was decisive in the year he was in Liga MX.
