Shaquille O’Neal shares his latest nickname “Shaq Blackafee” with Pat McAfee while unveiling podcast network

Shaquille O’Neal is undeniably one of the most iconic figures in NBA history. His list of accomplishments is a testament to his greatness: a 2000 MVP award, four NBA championships, two scoring titles, and the rare honor of having his jersey retired by three different teams (Lakers, Heat, and Magic). But Shaq’s influence extends far beyond the basketball court. He has released four rap albums, established himself as an electronic music producer and touring DJ known as Diesel, and serves as a co-host on TNT’s “Inside the NBA.” He even holds the record for the highest bill in Walmart history. Now, Shaq is adding another title to his already impressive resume by partnering with sports entertainment company Playmaker HQ to launch The Big Podcast Network.

Shaq ventures into the Podcast world

Shaq’s latest endeavor is designed to be a platform for athletes and other content creators to launch shows centered on sports, business, and entertainment. He shared insights about this new project on The Pat McAfee Show. McAfee, whose own rise to fame beyond football began with a podcast, recently signed a reported $85 million deal with ESPN. During their conversation, Shaq humorously quipped, “Pat, you know what they call me in the podcast world…Shaq BlackAfee.”

Shaq recognizes that McAfee’s success outside of football started with his podcast a few years ago, and he has since become one of the most influential voices in sports media. Shaq’s idea to support athletes in creating their own space is brilliant. While many athletes have the fame and financial means to launch their own platforms, partnering with someone experienced in the industry adds significant value. It’s also rumored that the “Inside the NBA” crew from TNT might transition to this type of content after the upcoming NBA season, given the league’s recent agreement with Amazon.

Athletes embrace the Podcast trend

In recent years, several current and former athletes like Paul George, CJ McCollum, Pat McAfee, the Kelce brothers, and Micah Parsons have launched their own podcasts. The latest athlete to join this trend is Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese. Her show will air weekly on Thursdays as part of Shaquille O’Neal’s “The Big Podcast Network” under Playmaker HQ. Shaq and Angel share a connection through their LSU roots and their dominance in rebounding, making their partnership a natural fit. Angel has already hinted that rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B will be among the guests on her show, which premiered yesterday. In the debut episode, she spoke at length about Caitlin Clark, who has quickly become one of the biggest stars in basketball and one of the most talked-about new athletes in the U.S.
