When the Brooklyn Nets raised Vince Carter‘s No.15 jersey to the rafters, it was a night of celebration, nostalgia, and heartfelt tributes.
But for one NBA legend, it was also a moment of unexpected disappointment. Shaquille O’Neal, one of the most dominant and outspoken figures in basketball history, found himself feeling left out – not just from this tribute, but from another major milestone in Carter‘s career.
The Hall of Famer and TNT analyst wasn’t about to stay silent about it, either. Instead, he made sure everyone knew he was holding a grudge, albeit in classic Shaq fashion-through humor, dramatics, and a little bit of pettiness.
During a segment on TNT Tuesday, the panel reflected on Carter’s emotional jersey retirement ceremony at the Barclays Center. Adam Lefkoe, Candace Parker, and the rest of the team praised the moment, highlighting how NBA legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving gave a moving speech in Carter’s honor.
But across the desk, Shaq wasn’t clapping-he was crumpling paper. At first, his antics went unnoticed. So he turned it up a notch, making even more noise until all eyes were on him. Finally, Carter, slightly confused, asked, “Wassup? You okay?”
That was all Shaq needed to unleash his grievance. “That’s twice you did that. You ain’t even invite me, bro.”
By “twice,” he was referring not just to Carter‘s Nets jersey retirement, but also to his Toronto Raptors jersey retirement in November 2024-neither of which included an invitation for O’Neal.
Carter, looking genuinely caught off guard, tried to explain, “You were busy.”
And, technically, he wasn’t wrong-Shaq had been working on Inside the NBA when Carter’s Raptors ceremony took place. But O’Neal wasn’t about to let that slide. “You didn’t invite me,” he repeated, milking the moment for all it was worth.
Learning About Dr. J’s Presence Made It Worse
If Shaq’s FOMO (fear of missing out) wasn’t already bad enough, discovering that Dr. J, his childhood idol, was present at Carter‘s ceremony only made it sting more.
“Damn,” he muttered under his breath, removing his glasses and dramatically shaking his head.
Then, just when it seemed like he might be letting it go, he hit Carter with a playful guilt trip:
“How many times you called me to get the code to my gyms so you could shoot in my gym?”
Carter, looking even more confused, hesitated. That’s when Shaq dropped the punchline: “None.”
As it turned out, it wasn’t Vince Carter who had been using Shaq’s gym all these years-it was Tracy McGrady, Carter’s cousin. So if anyone owed Shaq an invite to a jersey retirement, it was T-Mac.
An Awkward Birthday Hug and Shaq’s Final Word
As the segment wrapped up, Candace Parker tried to lighten the mood by wishing Carter a belated happy birthday. Hilariously, in all the excitement of the weekend, Carter admitted that he had completely forgotten his own birthday.
Shaq, still not done stirring the pot, demanded that Carter walk over so he could give him a proper birthday hug. The two met halfway, but the exchange quickly turned into an awkward Shaq-sized bear hug, with Carter barely able to respond except with a simple, uncomfortable “Awkward.”
At the end of the day, O’Neal‘s over-the-top antics were never truly about being left out-they were about reminding everyone that when it comes to celebrating basketball legends, Shaq wants to be part of the moment.
