The Shedeur Sanders soap opera seems to have no end. Just when all the pieces seemed to fall into place for the former Colorado Buffaloes star to secure his spot among the top three picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, new leaks reveal that things won’t be so simple.
The Colorado Pro Day was designed for the Buffs’ stars to show off in front of the media and teams, hoping to boost their draft stock. Sanders showcased a wide range of skills, throwing from all distances to impress recruiters and erase the negative image left behind after the NFL Scouting Combine.
However, the display doesn’t seem to have fully worked. According to The Athletic insider Dianna Russini, one of the teams that seemed most interested in Sanders has just stepped back, leaving the future of the heir to the legendary Deion Sanders up in the air.
What happened with the Browns and Shedeur?
In the latest episode of her podcast, Scoop City, Russini stated that after early interest in Sanders, the Cleveland Browns changed their plan of action for the 2025 Draft. Russini explained that after the NFL Owners Meeting this week, the team seemed determined to select a quarterback with their first-round pick, but “now that is shifting.”
According to the insider, the Browns have not ruled out selecting a quarterback with the second overall pick in this draft. However, the team has changed its tone and now seems to be saying, “Don’t be so sure we’re going quarterback,” Russini said.
The analyst couldn’t help but speculate whether the recent Pro Day had influenced the team’s sudden change of direction. “I wonder if that means they watched more on Shedeur Sanders and didn’t like it or [they] were able to get a situation with Kirk Cousins.”
Sanders and the Cousins factor
Last season was a roller coaster for Cousins. After signing a multimillion-dollar contract with the Atlanta Falcons, the quarterback suffered an unexpected midseason meltdown and ended up giving up the starting job to rookie Michael Penix Jr.
With Cousins’ debacle in Atlanta, some reports have linked the veteran signal-caller to the Browns. Such a trade would require a massive amount of willingness from all three parties, due to the high cost of the veteran’s contract, but nothing is impossible in the NFL in this regard.
With just three weeks until the NFL draft, we will soon know the fates of Sanders, Cousins, and Cleveland, because, as Russini said, the Browns “are going to be the team to decide what the heck goes down in this draft.”
