Deion and Shedeur Sanders form one of the most recognizable father-son duos in sports today. However, even the accomplished Coach Prime had to bow to the emotional moment LeBron and Bronny James experienced sharing an NBA court two weeks ago.
The Jameses made history by becoming the first father-son duo to play in the same game in the NBA when Bronny entered in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 23.
It’s worth mentioning that the “King” and his heir had already played in one preseason game on October 6 against the Phoenix Suns. However, the duel against the Timberwolves was the first official game in which they shared the court.
Media and fans celebrated the James’ achievement all over the Internet. However, the historic moment had a special effect on Deion Sanders, who even considered gearing up again to share the field with his sons, Shedeur and Shilo.
Will Deion Sanders put on the pads again?
On the most recent episode of his podcast, “2 Legendary,” Shedeur admitted that LeBron and Bronny’s achievement had a profound effect on him and his father. “I think it’s really inspiring,” admitted the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback.
But the emotion went even further. “I think dad thought about coming back. You know, one game,” Shedeur revealed. “He’s just gonna be on kickoff return and just be him… Just to make history. So I think it inspired him a little bit, you know, to put the pads back on.”
However, the plan never came to fruition. Deion and Shedeur seem to be very happy with their current professional relationship as head coach and signal-caller for the Buffs, which is an achievement in itself.
Coach Prime’s tribute to the King
Deion Sanders himself paid heartfelt tribute to the Jameses in a post on X (formerly Twitter) after the Oct. 22 game. “I’m COMING back to play with my sons too!” the former NFL star said at the time.
He added, “This is HISTORICAL! Give this man his FLOWERS NOW! This speaks to Fatherhood, Excellence, & Longevity. @KingJames @BronnyJamesJr.”
Sanders had a successful 14-season NFL career, achieving the distinction of being one of the few dual-threats in league history. Even if he never gets to play an official game with his sons, it’s clear that Coach Prime has carved his own place in sports history.
