Shilo Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, grabbed attention online after joking during a recent livestream that he’s “preparing for World War III” while playing Call of Duty.
The offbeat comment quickly went viral, offering a glimpse of Sanders‘ personality beyond the football field and highlighting the unpredictable path his career and personal life have taken since his college days.
Sanders, who is well known for his candid personality and digital content, made the comment about a possible global conflict while gaming, prompting laughter and reactions from viewers who recognized the tongue-in-cheek nature of his statement. “I’m not going to lie, this is real life…They said we’re going to war soon, so I gotta get right,” he said on the livestream.
While fans quickly shared clips of the moment across platforms, the backdrop to Sanders‘ humor is far from trivial for those less familiar with his recent history.
A promising journey with high hurdles
Sanders‘ football path began with high expectations. After a noteworthy college career that included stints at South Carolina, Jackson State University, and Colorado, where he played under his father, he entered the 2025 NFL Draft.
Though his name wasn’t called, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him as an undrafted free agent, giving him a shot to compete at the professional level.
That opportunity, however, was short-lived. On August 23, 2025, during the Buccaneers‘ third and final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, Sanders was ejected for throwing a punch at tight end Zach Davidson. Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles openly criticized the act, asserting, “You can’t throw punches in this league, that’s inexcusable.”
Less than 24 hours later, the Buccaneers waived Sanders as part of the final roster cuts required before the regular season. Despite his contributions in earlier preseason contests, the altercation and subsequent ejection effectively stalled his bid to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.
Following his release, he was fined $4,669 by the NFL for the unnecessary roughness penalty, a rare scenario in which he was penalized by the league despite no longer being on an active roster.
With the NFL door closed for the time being and no practice squad claims forthcoming, Sanders has spent recent months exploring other paths.
In a video shared after his departure from Tampa Bay, he spoke candidly about life after football and expressed confidence in leveraging other interests, including fashion, music, and content creation, while signaling his intent to stay ready for another potential shot at professional play.
On top of the professional uncertainty, Sanders is entangled in longstanding legal challenges that have shadowed much of his adult life.
A court in Dallas entered a default judgment against him for $11.89 million over an alleged 2015 altercation with a school security guard when Sanders was a teenager. He filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in late 2023 in an attempt to discharge that debt, listing significantly more liabilities than assets.
