Simone Biles reveals she gives her husband a lot of space ahead of NFL games with the Chicago Bears because she understands the stress of being a professional athlete, but that he always makes time for her before taking to the field.
Jonathan Owens is in his debut season as a Bear after joining from the Green Bay Packers, so the 27-year-old gymnast is regularly spotted at Soldier Field and around the rest of the venues in the league.
However, she revealed that sometimes she can’t be there with him, even if she’s in the same city, because of team regulations that require him to remain at the Bears’ chosen hotels, but sweetly noted he always comes back to her to say goodbye.
“Pre-game, I just let him do him,” Biles told PEOPLE. “Because I know how stressful that can be sometimes.
“But he loves to come see me because he usually has to stay at the team hotel, so he loves to come see me, kiss me goodbye.”
What does Biles do when Owens is playing football?
When he takes to the field to try to smash into opposing running backs, wide receivers and tight ends in his role as a safety, Biles goes off to find whoever she is supposed to be watching the game with.
There she discusses the outcome of the game and usually heads to grab a drink with them too in a “debrief”, and it seems her exposure to football is finally forcing her to learn about how the game is played.
“My dad and my brothers were always watching football, but I was never into it,” Biles added to PEOPLE. “But I was always at the gym too, it’s not like I even had time to get to know it.
“In the very beginning, the Texans [in her hometown of Houston] would always bring me out so that I could lead the team out the tunnel and all of that good stuff, but I still knew absolutely not a thing about football.
“I’ve learned so much and even some of his teammates’ wives are like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’ve come so far, you’ve learned so much,’ because they’ve seen the journey.”
