There have been many Tomb Raider video games over the decades, giving gamers the chance to play as British archaeologist Lara Croft as she goes on globe-trotting adventures, “searching for lost artefacts and infiltrating dangerous tombs and ruins.” Angelina Jolie played the character in two feature films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003). Alicia Vikander took over the role in the 2018 reboot Tomb Raider – and she was planning to return for a sequel, but then the project fell apart. Now Tomb Raider is set to receive a live-action TV series adaptation on Amazon’s Prime Video, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose credits include Crashing, Fleabag, No Time to Die, and Killing Eve, writing and developing the show. Sophie Turner is playing Lara Croft this time around, and with production underway, she has been spotted on the set with guns blazing! Video of Turner’s Croft firing her guns can be seen at the bottom of this article, along with some images.
Behind the Scenes
The TV series project is a collaboration between Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM. Chad Hodge (Single All the Way, The Playboy Club, Wayward Pines) and Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, Dope Thief) are executive producers. In addition to executive producing, Tulleken directs the production. Executive producers include Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robbins for Wells Street Productions; Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson for Story Kitchen; Michael Scheel; Hodge; and Legendary Television.
Cast
Turner is joined in the Tomb Raider cast by Martin Bobb-Semple as Zip, Sigourney Weaver as Evelyn Wallis, Jason Isaacs as Atlas DeMornay, Bill Paterson as Winston, Jack Bannon as Gerry, John Heffernan as David, Celia Imrie as Francine, and Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, and August Wittgenstein in unspecified roles.
Waller-Bridge previously said, “Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters. I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams.”
