Klay Thompson‘s journey with the Golden State Warriors concluded as he moved to the Dallas Mavericks. His departure has left a palpable sense of loss among his former Warriors teammates, with both Draymond Green and Stephen Curry openly expressing their emotions about Thompson’s absence.
“Not having Klay still hasn’t really sunk in… We’ve been doing it for 13 years together… I have this idea that in October [he’ll come back]… I know that’s not happening,” Curry said.
A duo that made history
Curry and Thompson, famously known as the “Splash Brothers,” had been a dynamic duo since 2011, setting unprecedented records for 3-point shooting.
They are the only pair of teammates to ever combine for over 600 3-pointers in a single season, hitting a remarkable 678 in the 2015-16 season. Their collaboration on the court led the Warriors to secure four NBA championships over their 13 seasons together.
Thompson’s unexpected departure from the Warriors came as a surprise to many. The situation took a dramatic turn when he unfollowed the team on Instagram, signaling a shift as negotiations failed to reach a favorable conclusion.
In an interview with NBA.com, Stephen Curry shared his perspective on the split, acknowledging that, given the circumstances, parting ways was the most viable solution.
“That’s what it came down to: he was in need of a change. It wasn’t a situation where I needed to convince him to stay. I knew what he meant to our organization. It was just one of those situations where you have to trust he’s making the right decision for himself,” Curry said.
“At the end of the day I want him to be happy. He deserves to enjoy playing basketball however long he wants to play. It just [stinks] that it won’t be with us.”
