Steve Kerr reveals the big problem the Warriors have with Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga‘s situation with the Golden State Warriors has become one of the NBA‘s most talked-about storylines in early 2026.

What started as an awkward offseason has escalated into a complex dynamic affecting both the young forward and the organization.

The 23-year-old forward has been sidelined for much of the last month-and-a half and Kuminga has not been seen on court in the Warriors’ last 15 games.

Head coach Steve Kerr, who has led the Warriors to four championships over 12 years, addressed the situation candidly in an interview with local radio.

“I’m just gonna say, it’s a difficult situation. I think you guys know it. Everybody knows it. You know I’m just gonna leave it at that,” Kerr said.

“We have to control what we can control and try to keep moving the ship forward. This is not an easy situation. It’s not an easy one to talk about, frankly. I try to protect everybody organizationally. And nobody’s winning right now with this situation and it’s unfortunate, but it is what it is.”

The tension stems from a mismatch between Kuminga and Kerr’s coaching approach, which has impacted the team’s overall rhythm. Despite a lucrative two-year, $48 million extension signed by Kuminga in the offseason, the pairing has struggled to click, leaving the young forward largely sidelined.

Kuminga’s camp aims to protect his trade value

With the trade deadline approaching, Kuminga and his representatives are focused on preserving his market value. The forward has reportedly been keen on exploring opportunities away from the Warriors since last summer. Sources say his camp wants to ensure limited playing time does not hurt his appeal to potential suitors across the league.

“Kuminga and his camp believe it is in his best interest to stay ready behind the scenes and no longer let Steve Kerr‘s decisions regarding the young forward’s minutes impact his value,” NBA insider Brett Siegel reported.

The strategy also reduces the risk of injury while waiting for a trade that aligns with Kuminga’s long-term interests.

Priorities no longer align

The underlying issue is now more about timing than talent. The Golden State Warriors are focused on winning in the immediate season, while Kuminga is prioritizing his future and career trajectory. These differing priorities have made it difficult to find a middle ground, with both sides acknowledging the mismatch without assigning blame.

As the trade deadline approaches, attention will be on how Jonathan Kuminga‘s situation develops. Whether the Warriors can adjust or whether a move elsewhere occurs, the resolution of this chapter will likely influence the team’s short-term performance and the young forward’s long-term trajectory in the NBA.
