Design, measurements and price of the Vince Lombardi Trophy
The design came about in 1966, when then NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle asked the prestigious jewelry company Tiffany & Co. to design a new trophy for the league champions in this new Super Bowl era. Tiffany & Co. vice president Oscar Riedner was commissioned to design the award, although he knew nothing about the sport
To that end, he decided to buy a football from FAO Schwarz to look for some idea. The next morning, while eating a bowl of corn pops, he cut up the cereal box, made a stand and placed the ball in kicking position on top. Later, during a lunch with Rozelle and Riedner, he drew a much more finished sketch, which was what he finally presented to the league
The end result is an extremely luxurious item, made of sterling silver, standing 22.75 inches tall and weighing 107.3 ounces. Its estimated value exceeds $10,000.
History of the Vince Lombardi Trophy
Although the essence of football has been practiced in the United States since 1869, the first Super Bowl trophy was awarded almost 100 years later, in 1967, when the Green Bay Packers, led by legendary coach Vince Lombardi, defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I. The Packers repeated the triumph the following year against the Oakland Raiders, ending the era of Lombardi’s Packers and their quarterback, Bart Starr.
At that time, the cup was called: ‘World Professional Football Championship Trophy’ but, in recognition of this team, which dominated the old NFL before the Super Bowl era and also became the first two-time champion of this new era, the new NFL decided to honor the legendary coach by giving his name to the trophy, who died of cancer at the age of 57, in late 1970
The Lombardi Trophy was formally awarded for the first time to the Baltimore Colts in their victory in Super Bowl V against the Dallas Cowboys
