The Criterion Collection is ready to give KPop Demon Hunters heart eyes this afternoon after announcing that the Oscar-nominated animated film is getting added to the beloved organization’s library. In addition to sharing the KPop Demon Hunters news, Criterion says it’s also bringing Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein to the collection!
Oscar nominations all around
Today’s Criterion news is doubly exciting, as it’s rare for Netflix films or series to make the leap to Blu-ray in general, let alone get the bespoke Criterion Collection treatment. The Academy recently nominated KPop Demon Hunters for two awards in the Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song categories. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is nominated for nine, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Jacob Elordi, who plays the creature.
Criterion has yet to share any details about either release, including release dates or specifics on bonus content. However, plenty of excitement stems from both films coming to physical media in any form. Typically, Netflix keeps its content under lock and key, rarely granting physical releases of its exclusive movies and television series. Guillermo del Toro fans will be over the moon about adding the filmmaker’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale to their library. Still, it’s KPop Demon Hunters fans who are going to lose their collective minds. I don’t know this for sure, but I would put money on Criterion including a sing-along version of the film, which I’m sure parents will love! Heh heh hehhhhh.
I’ll be pre-ordering a copy of KPop Demon Hunters at my local CinemaOne, and can’t wait to see the look on my wife’s face when it arrives. As much as I love KPop Demon Hunters, she’s positively obsessed. Knowing that we don’t need to rely on Netflix to watch the film whenever we want is a welcome luxury, and I look forward to seeing the packaging too.
A guilt trip among friends
Even though JoBlo’s Alex Maidy thinks KPop Demon Hunters is overrated, I haven’t disowned him. It’s not his fault that he doesn’t see the film’s genius, brilliant writing, laugh-out-loud gags, and heartening message of overcoming an identity crisis. In fact, I might guilt him into buying my copy of the movie. Trust me. I have my ways. Hear that, Alex? Get your wallet ready, Buck-o!
