Dallas Mavericks star point guard Kyrie Irving has once again ignited the public conversation off the court by launching a scathing criticism of the racial hypocrisy that he says is still prevalent in society. In a live broadcast, the player did not hold back and lashed out at the prejudice and discrimination that he claims continues to affect African-American communities.
This is the stupidest shit I’ve ever seen in my life. People care more about the color of your skin than what you have in your heart or in your head. That tells you everything about the society we live in
Kyrie Irving
The former Nets, Celtics and Cavaliers player, known both for his talent and his willingness to speak out on social issues, delved into how these structures of discrimination limit the development of black people in the United States.
The way this system is set up is not made for us to thrive. It’s designed to keep us in one place. And every time someone tries to break the mold, they’re called ‘troublesome’ or ‘problematic’. Why?
Kyrie Irving
Kyrie also referenced the experiences he has had throughout his NBA career, mentioning that he has been the victim of racist attacks, even in stadiums.
I’ve heard horrible things in the stands. It doesn’t matter how many points you score or how many times you win. For some, you’re always going to be just a black man
Kyrie Irving
This is not the first time Irving has used his platform to speak out on racial issues. From the social movements of 2020 to his stance on education and mental health in marginalized communities, the Mavericks point guard has been steadfast in his convictions, albeit not without controversy.
I’m not just a basketball player. I’m a human being with a story, with roots, and with the right to speak out
